Wildlife

The countryside around Barrhill has wildlife in abundance. Just a short walk along the lanes from the village and you may see red squirrel, deer, hare, rabbit, ermine, fox, voles, mice, lizard, adder, slow worm, frog, toad and newts. Overhead it is common to see buzzards circling, other raptors include hen harrier, sparrowhawk, kestrel and merlin. In my garden I have recorded over 40 different species of bird in the first 5 months of 2011 and that does not include the the fly-bys and ones seen through binoculars. Highlights would be the nesting Pied Flycatcher, the Hen Harrier that opportunistically dived on the small birds using the bird feeding station and the Crossbills just up the road.
